Report Launch | Structural Precariousness: Migrant Construction Workers in Bangkok Metropolitan Region
29 April 2026

On 29 April 2026, SEA Junction organized the launch of the report “Structural Precariousness: Migrant Construction Workers in Bangkok Metropolitan Region” as part of the Wednesday SEA Mobilities seminar series. The event was based on a year-long research project led by Rosalia Sciortino, Director of SEA Junction and Associate Professor at the Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR), Mahidol University. The research was conducted through a collaborative effort between IPSR and Baan Dek Foundation with support from Kindernothilfe (KNH) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The report examined the structural precariousness experienced by migrant workers in Bangkok’s construction industry, including inadequate labour protection, unsafe working conditions, limited access to healthcare and social servic, and informal employment arrangements. The event featured welcoming remarks by Chalermpol Chamchan, Director of IPSR, and Lene Andersen, Executive Director of Baan Dek Foundation. Rosalia Sciortino presented the report findings, followed by commentary from Rebecca Napier-Moore of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The newly published research report in English, along with research briefs in English and Thai, were launched during the event and made available to participants.

This event was also part of the Wednesday SEA Mobilities seminar series, an initiative first launched in 2022 by SEA Junction and IPSR’s Mahidol Migration Centre – Joint Research Unit (MMC-JRU). The series discusses a wide range of contemporary mobility issues in Southeast Asia with experts, academics, practitioners, NGO workers, and migrants. Conducted in English, the event was livestreamed on the Facebook pages of SEA Junction and IPSR.
